Grand mal describes a generalized seizure—an episode where abnormal electrical activity in the brain causes a loss of consciousness with body stiffening followed by rhythmic jerking. This is a neurological event, not an allergic reaction, infection, or injury. In dogs, you might see collapse, stiff limbs during the tonic phase, then rhythmic shaking in the clonic phase, drooling, or loss of responsiveness.

In a grooming context, recognizing this helps you respond safely: gently move the dog away from hazards, protect the head, avoid restraining the mouth, and time the seizure. Seek veterinary care, especially if it’s the first seizure, lasts longer than a few minutes, or occurs repeatedly. Afterward, the dog may be disoriented or sleepy, which is normal but should be monitored.
